hello

“I woke up on Mother’s Day last year with a serious pain in my breast...from that day onwards my life was filled with specialist appointments, biopsies, surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. Just before I started chemo, I became really emotional. I couldn’t speak about my children without crying...but I had amazing support from my husband, family and friends. Finally I thought, I’m going to fight this, I’m going to be here for my boys.”

Around 12,000 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone.

While we’ve come a long way – more than 84% of women will survive due to breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatments – there’s still a lot to do to improve treatment, support and ensure more women survive breast cancer.

The funds that you raise this Pink Ribbon Day will help us to give more women complete support. The money raised will fund:

  • Research into causes and treatment for cancer. More than $49 million will be spent in 2008.
  • Support services and information for anyone affected, throughout diagnosis and treatment. This includes the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20, a confidential telephone service, staffed by cancer health specialists.
  • Education programs for women to be ‘breast aware’ such as the Community Speakers Program. Early detection results in a greater chance of successful treatment.
  • Funds are spent in the state/ territory where they are raised, directly supporting the needs of the community.
